Narongsak Osottanakorn, a former governor for the region who is helping with the rescue efforts, said teams were ready to rescue the boys imminently.
He then confirmed during a press conference that at 10am local time (4am BST) 18 divers entered the cave.
Speaking of the team – made up of 13 international and five Thai divers – Mr Osttanakorn called them “all stars”.
He said preparations to save the boys had been ongoing for most of last week and were stepped up as conditions improved.
Mr Osttanakorn added: “At 9pm last night we started clearing many things because we have reached the peak point of readiness.
“As for the kid factor, the kids are very determined and they are of high spirit.
“All 13 kids have been informed about the operation and they are ready to come out. They firmly decided to come out with us.
